Indoor Swimming Pool Considerations
We are a supplier and technical HVAC representative for many types of
equipment so when someone wants us to select and quote equipment for a swimming pool, we
do not know what the owner really wants and needs. This is a guide to help the owner
decide
Each one of the following points may be important to the owner but he must choose:
- Lowest First Cost...or...Lowest Operating & Fuel Cost?
- Building Deterioration over Time from Moisture...or...Prevent Condensate?
- Uncomfortable for Occupants...or...Comfortable for People Using?
- Manual Controls...or...Completely Year-Round Automatic?
- Ignore Building Codes...or...Provide Ventilation Air?
many existing and proposed swimming pools continuously have problems because the lowest
first cost equipment was installed while dismissing all future owner needs.
Fresh-Air Make-up is Cheapest
Gas fired units by AbsolutAire may provide the lowest installed cost but the fuel
bill will be very high. Much more fuel is required to heat cold outside air up to room
temperature than to offset heat loss through walls, roof and windows. This is cheap for
the promoter or contractor but the owner is saddled with the high fuel bills.
Air-to-Air Heat Recovery Reduces Fuel
XeteX Air-to-Air exchangers reduce the fuel costs by the amount of heat recovered
and re-used. These are higher first cost and auxiliary heaters are required to bring the
temperature high enough. Residential exchanger size and heating capacity are usually too
small. Heat-X-Changers must be selected to make provision for the rigors of
swimming pool conditions to prevent corrosion, size large enough and set-up automatic
controls.
Dehumidifiers Provide Air Conditioning
Refrigerant dehumidifiers like DCA can often be fitted with a remote condenser to
also provide air conditioning when needed. When the pool occupants require cooling in the
summer such as spectators, loungers and non-swimmers who want to enjoy the pool atmosphere
in lower than outdoor temperature, a DCA dehumidifier should be selected. However, if
cooling is not required or wanted, other types of equipment may be a better choice.
Air Distribution is Critical to Comfort and Building Health
Stagnant, moist air is oppressive to people and building. An air distribution system that
assures movement of all pool air even in the corners with adequate fresh/ventilation air
mixed-in is critical. Dry air must blow over outside windows and walls first to dry them
and prevent condensate and frosting. Other air should move by gravity to prevent drafts or
fast moving air to evaporate pool moisture and make swimmers uncomfortable. Cool air must
be avoided because the warmer pool-water temperature will drive excess, unexpected
moisture into the air and overload the system. Underground ductwork with floor diffusers
blowing air over the windows is desirable provided the installation first cost is
manageable. Fabric Q-duct is a lower cost solution to all the above
problems, is cleanable, and costs are lower than sheet metal installed.
Consider a Pool-Master System
We have combined the best features of each type of swimming pool unit into a complete
system that is controlled automatically. All of them have a complete control system that
automatically controls dehumidification, ventilation, reheat, and summer air cooling if
desired. When the most energy-saving, economical system is required, we suggest a
combination re-heater, high effectiveness XeteX "Pool-Master" to recover
exhaust heat, ventilate and automatically control dehumidification year 'round. Where air
conditioning is required, we suggest a DCA refrigeration unit with self-contained heat
recovery ventilator, re-heater and central control system to automatically provide desired
conditions for all seasons.
Don't be satisfied to accept whatever type of equipment is suggested. Seldom will any
one-type function correctly without other unit types brought in to provide a system.
Someone needs to take a detailed look at how and what is to be controlled. Indoor swimming
pools require much more planning than standard HVAC equipment in houses and commercial
buildings. We can Help. Contact us for further help or information. Visit this link to see
